Dasanjali Lesson 10

Practice what you learn in class every week at home, preferably for 15 to 30 minutes every day.

Practice the song, Prema Mudita, that we learnt earlier, noting the following observations. The 2 "Sree Raama Raama Raam" lines are different in the 1st paragraph from all the other paragraphs, as you may have observed. In the following explanation, the vertical line separators or pipe symbols (|) are just to be treated as plain separators for visual clarity and do not have their meaning on Western music sheets (full note, etc.). I use the ellipsis (..) to indicate stretching a note. ( e.g. R..S to indicate stretcting the R for some time). Of course, I use the comma after a note to indicate a note in the lower octave and an apostrophe after a note (no example here) to indicate a note in the higher octave. Note the case of the notes - to indicate Shuddha (uppercase) or Komal (lowercase) notes. Practice playing the following notes on your keyboard as you sing them.

Ask someone to play a random Shuddha note in any of the 3 octaves we sing in (N, S ... upto S' R') and guess the note.
Then, make it more challenging and ask that person to play upto 6 random Shuddha notes and guess all those notes. Remember to close your eyes and concentrate on the notes being played. If necessary, ask that person to play the foundational notes, S, P and S' or the previous set of recognized notes, to give you good reference points.
If you want it more challenging, try to guess komal notes and tibre m as well.

Learn to sing the following alankaar, using the SRGM notes as well as aakaar.

Learn a new song on Goddess Saraswathi in Raag Shuddha Saarang and Taal Keharwa, Saraswathi Shaarada Maayee. This song is preceded by a short, familiar sloka, "Saraswathi Namastubhyam".
End this lesson by singing the familiar song, Hey Prabhu.
